Columbus Looks To Retake Cup in nearly 100-Year-Old Rivalry
Fremont and Columbus will battle for the F&C Cup on Friday night.

COLUMBUS – The Discoverers are gearing up for one of the oldest rivalries in the state as they look to win back the historic F&C Cup.

Columbus hosts Fremont on Friday night in a rivalry match that dates back to the 1920’s as the young Discoverer team searches for its second win of the season. Columbus Head Coach Craig Williams says their is no shortage of motivation for his players this.

“There’s no question about it. You come into meetings on Monday morning and all you have to say is ‘it’s Fremont Week,’ and guys sit up a little bit more in their chair, they pay a little more attention. They are out here doing hitting drills and picturing a Fremont jersey across from them…”

The rivalry couldn’t be much more closely contested. As it stands heading into Friday night Fremont holds a one win lead in the series which sits at 46-45-1 in favor of the Tigers.

“To have the history behind this and to actually have it where Fremont’s got a one win advantage with one tie in there. It’s just been such a close rivalry, a fierce rivalry…”

Coming into this season with a group light on experience Williams knows his team is going to have to put fourth a great effort to reclaim the cup which Fremont has held onto since the two teams last met in 2015, a game the Tigers came out on top of 27-0.

“We’ve got to play on Fremont’s side of the ball on offense and defense. If we have a stalemate we won’t be successful. We’ve got to be aggressive, we’ve got to play with a low pad level, we’ve got to be the most aggressive team on the field on every single play…”

The game will be broadcast live on NCN with coverage beginning at 6:40 PM. The contest will also be streamed online at
