COLUMBUS – Kaitlyn Kleinheksel is going to be taking her softball talents a hair to the north, after committing to play for the Raiders on Monday.
The Lakeview Senior played all four years for the softball varsity team, starting the final three years. Lakeview Coach Erica Zywiec says she will miss having Kleinheksel on the diamond, but Central Coach Jack Gutierrez is excited about what she will add to the 2018 squad.
“She’s been a fantastic 1st baseman, she scooped everything up for us and we could count on her for big hits,” says Zywiec. “She did it on both sides of the ball. She really dug us out of situations, when they didn’t throw the ball to her very well, so we’re definitely going to miss that at 1st base.”
Gutierrez says, “I just think she has a real calm about her when she plays. I think she has untapped potential, as far as a hitter. She’s got a nice swing, a good eye for the ball, and we plan to play her at some first base, and I think she’ll be a good asset for our program.”
Kleinheksel hit a career average of .305 and added a career fielding average of .985, says Zywiec.
Kleinheksel says she is looking forward to playing for a great program and coach like Gutierrez.
“[I chose Central] Mainly because of Jack, I’ve known him forever, and I just wanted to stay local,” says Kleinheksel, “I enjoyed my team all four years that I was here, and I’m really going to miss them.”
Kleinheksel joins Lakeview alum and 3rd baseman Rayna Whitmore on the Raiders team, and says she plans to study social working.
