New commitment to football sets up Lourdes to be a tough out in postseason

NEBRASKA CITY – The Lourdes Central Catholic football team navigated through a brutal schedule to earn their fifth consecutive trip (23rd overall) to the Nebraska School Activities Association State Football Playoffs.

The Knights were 1-3 on Sept. 14 with losses to teams with a combined 23-1 record this season – Falls City Sacred Heart, Exeter-Milligan/Friend and BDS. Lourdes finished the regular season on a four-game winning streak to go unbeaten in Class D1-2 district play and earn the No. 9 seed in the “East Bracket” with a 5-3 record.

They’ll travel to Wisner on Thursday to play No. 8 Wisner-Pilger (6-2) in the Class D1 first round. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. and will air on News Channel Nebraska television and, thanks to the support of Miller Monroe Farrell Insurance in Nebraska City.

Huskerland Prep Report Publisher Bob Jensen says the Knights and Gators game has a chance to be one of the more exciting games of the first round.

“Lourdes plays good football. Some of that’s a product of people’s commitment to football. Some of it’s athletes. Some of it is an expectation and it just feels like there is more of that. The last couple years in the playoffs, Lourdes has been tough to knockout. That’s going to be the same thing against Wisner-Pilger.”

The Gators, playing eight-man football for the first time in school history, are making their first trip to the postseason since 2009.

According to Jensen, Wisner-Pilger is big upfront and have played well against good competition this fall. He doesn’t expect them to have “starry eyes” in their first playoff game in nine years.

The winner between the Knights and the Gators will play the winner of No. 1 Creighton (8-0) and No. 16 Southern (4-4) in the second round. Creighton is Jensen’s pick to win the Class D1 state title.

Table Creek Golf Course in Nebraska City is hosting a watch party for fans to watch the Lourdes Central Catholic and Wisner-Pilger game at 6 p.m. Thursday. The game will air on the big screen. Food and drink specials will be available.
