New Nebraska linebackers coach Barrett Ruud quickly making an impact

LINCOLN — While new coach Scott Frost didn’t announce any of his assistants Sunday, several were already recruiting for the Huskers the first day on the job.

One of those is a former Husker All-America linebacker Barrett Ruud.

Ruud, who still has the school record for career tackles with 432, served as a quality control associate on Frost’s staff at UCF. At NU, he’ll be a linebackers coach. He’s already offered one of the nation’s top junior college linebackers — Butler County’s Will Honas — and conducted an in-home visit with Lincoln Southeast defensive tackle Bryson Williams, the Wisconsin commit who received a scholarship offer from NU on Sunday.

A third-team All-American and first-team All-Big 12 player in 2004, Ruud was a second-round draft pick of the Buccaneers in 2005. He played eight seasons in the NFL, and then was a graduate manager for the Huskers in 2014 under former coach Bo Pelini. Ruud was not retained by Mike Riley.

He joined Frost’s staff in 2016.

According to multiple reports, recruits and World-Herald confirmations, NU’s new assistants also include quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco, running backs coach Ryan Held, offensive line coach Greg Austin, defensive coordinator Erik Chinander and defensive line coach Mike Dawson. Austin and Held both played at Nebraska, and Held was a longtime junior college coach. All coached for Frost at UCF.

Frost said he was likely to bring almost all of his assistants from UCF.

Offensive coordinator Tory Walters — a finalist for the Broyles Award — is UCF’s interim coach as it prepares for the bowl, and presumably a candidate to replace Frost as coach at UCF, which is also looking at candidates outside the program. Frost also has a prior working history with Washington assistant Matt Lubick, who worked with Frost at Oregon. Lubick is the co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach for the Huskies.
