Huskers earn doubleheader sweep of New Mexico State in home opener

LINCOLN — Nebraska scored in each of its final four innings, erasing a one-run deficit in both the seventh and the eighth to rally for a 7-6 win over New Mexico State in the first game of a home-opening doubleheader Saturday at Bowlin Stadium.

A six-run sixth powered NU in the nightcap, as the Huskers completed a doubleheader sweep with a 9-3 win.

The Huskers (6-16) trailed 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth in the opener. NU scored once in the fifth and twice in the sixth to trim the deficit to one. Kaylan Jablonski then tied the game with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh.

After New Mexico State plated an unearned run in the top of the eighth, the Huskers scored twice in the bottom of the frame, winning on a two-out RBI single from Alyvia Simmons.

Simmons finished 3 for 4 with the winning RBI, marking the first three-hit game of her career. Tristen Edwards also went 3 for 4 — her first career three-hit game — and scored the winning run.

Jablonski’s homer was her first of the season, while MJ Knighten went 2 for 4 and hit her second home run of the year.

In addition to hitting the tying home run, Jablonski earned the win in relief. The junior from Omaha Skutt improved to 2-8 on the season after tossing a scoreless inning.

The win was the Huskers’ 12th straight in home openers.

In game two, NU trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth before again rallying.

The Huskers scored twice to tie the game before exploding for the six-run sixth.

With the win, Nebraska clinched its first winning weekend of the season.

Nebraska pounded out 13 hits, including four doubles. Knighten, Laura Barrow, Jablonski, Taylor Otte, Austen Urness and Simmons all produced multi-hit games for the Huskers.

Jablonski drew the start and allowed three runs in five innings. Cassie McClure (4-5) earned the win in relief, tossing two scoreless innings.

Nebraska began its rally in the bottom of the fifth.

Jablonski’s one-out, RBI double scored Knighten, who had drawn a leadoff walk and stolen second. Barrow tied the game with a two-out, RBI single up the middle that plated Jablonski.

The Huskers then grabbed a 9-3 lead in the sixth. The inning started with an error and Knighten followed with an RBI double. Urness drove in another run with a single.

A sacrifice bunt from Alexis Perry put two runners in scoring position before pinch-runner Bree Boruff scored on a wild pitch. Barrow then reached on an infield single that scored Jablonski. Simmons wrapped up the scoring with a two-run double to left.

McClure worked around a leadoff single in the top of the seventh to secure her team-leading fourth win of the year.

Nebraska and New Mexico State wrap up their three-game series at noon Sunday. Then the Huskers travel to take on Wichita State on Monday at 5 p.m.
