Senior Tyra Buss helps Indiana deliver season’s first road loss to Husker women

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Nebraska’s seasonlong road winning streak was stopped by a Buss on Saturday.

All-Big Ten guard Tyra Buss scored 37 points as Indiana defeated the Huskers 83-75 , handing them their first road loss after nine victories.

Buss, a slender 5-foot-8 senior, hit 13 of 25 shots from the floor and 8 of 8 free throws as the Hoosiers (15-12, 8-6) won their seventh straight after a 1-6 start to Big Ten play.

“She just did a great job of getting to the basket,” NU coach Amy Williams said during her postgame radio interview. “We knew it was going to be a team defensive effort. We didn’t do a good job of containing the ball and making her score over the top of us.”

The Huskers (19-8, 10-4) trailed most of the final three quarters, but they cut the gap to 67-66 with 3:35 left after five straight points by Nicea Eliely.

But the Hoosiers answered with eight straight, all by Buss and fellow senior Amanda Cahill (16 points, 10 rebounds, seven blocks).

“Credit to Indiana,” Williams said. “They really played well and made shots when they needed to.”

Eliely and Janay Morton scored 12 apiece for the Huskers. Hannah Whitish and Jasmine Cincore each added 11. Center Kate Cain contributed 10 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, and Taylor Kissinger totaled 10 points and 10 rebounds after a scoreless first half.

“I thought they were really keying on not giving her open looks behind the arc,” Williams said. “I thought she did a good job of trying to find other ways to impact things for us offensively.”

The Huskers slipped into third place in the Big Ten, a half-game behind Ohio State (10-3) and 1½ behind Maryland (11-2).

Nebraska, still in contention for an NCAA tournament bid, plays its final home game at 7 p.m. Thursday against Penn State, then wraps up the regular season Feb. 25 at Maryland.
