The Opportunity
Northeast Nebraska is a very dynamic region with a high energy level that creates an exciting environment for entrepreneurial success and free enterprise to thrive. Norfolk was named the 2014 Nebraska Diplomats Community of the Year and in 2013 won the  National Chamber of the Year.  Our goal is to continue to build on these successes as we move forward.

We are looking for an experienced leader who understands the role of a successful chamber to grow commerce, promote members and connect people in the Norfolk area and northeast Nebraska. This leader will be our new President and CEO of the Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce.

You will be working in historic downtown Norfolk in a state-of-the-art building that opened in 2012.  The building houses our partners which include the Norfolk Area Visitors Bureau, 4 Lanes 4 Nebraska, SCORE, Nebraska Community Foundation, and Nebraska Business Development Center.

The CEO is the leader of the management team at the Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce and shall report directly to an 18-member Chamber Board of Directors.  As the Norfolk area’s voice of business and community marketing agency, the chamber’s primary role is to tell the Norfolk story and to educate and advise the businesses of today and tomorrow. The Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce is the heart, soul, and energy of the Norfolk area as a business destination.

The Person
The ideal person for this position will have a strong passion for what they do and will be a visible community leader with strong advocacy skills.  They must be able to work effectively with a wide variety of people and organizations in a collaborative manner. They must balance and integrate the interests of 600+ business members, their 15,000 employees, and the community.  The CEO must have a strong focus on external relationships and partnership building.  Our new CEO must be someone who inspires broad vision and strategic planning; organizes and coordinates functional and leadership activities; implements and coordinates programs and activities to promote business growth, and performs all related duties necessary for success.

Planning and Organizing
Our new CEO will conduct a disciplined annual planning process, in partnership with the Board of Directors and community partners, to develop and implement an action plan to grow commerce, promote members, and connect people.  This will include an annual plan outlining the chamber’s programs and activities to maximize community and revenue growth and achieve the annual goals set by our team.

The CEO will develop and recommend the annual organization budget and business plan for board approval in order to achieve the organization mission and vision in a timely and cost-effective manner.  The CEO needs an organizer who can cover all of the details to make that next big community initiative a huge success. They also need to be able to rally the volunteers to achieve success.

Our new CEO will develop positive non-partisan relationships with elected and appointed government and agency officials, as well as, all represented entities of the chamber industry both within and outside of Nebraska. They will establish and maintain relationships with the various media outlets, in order to enhance business development throughout the region.

Marketing Expertise
Our new CEO needs to have tremendous vision and creativity to bring new ideas to the table to move the Norfolk area forward. They also need to be able to very effectively encourage other people to bring those new ideas into the mix.

The CEO will be focused on selling the Norfolk area. They need to be able to tell our story effectively and in collaboration with the area’s economic development teams to prospective businesses and potential new families outside of our area. If you are successful, the recipients of your message will wonder why they did not come here sooner.

The CEO will meet regularly with the Chamber team to strategize and prepare our roadmap for business and community growth.

The CEO shall staff committees and task forces as needed, with special emphasis on small business, workforce development, people attraction and special events planning.

The CEO must have or develop an understanding of a chamber of commerce, in addition to a background in community development, event planning, and marketing.  They must possess outstanding written and oral communication skills.  They must be able to network effectively and work well with volunteers.

Education and training equivalent to a college degree in marketing or business administration, plus a minimum of five years of management experience or equivalent is desired.  A US Chamber Institute graduate degree is a bonus.

Strong financial management skills are crucial for this role as annual budget responsibilities fall under the CEO’s role. Some travel, industry conferences, evening and weekend hours will be a requirement of this position.

All staff, including the President and CEO, shall fill in as needed in all areas of the Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce operations.  The Chamber staff shall act as a team and work together as one towards our goals.
