HUMPHREY – Bank of the Valley has partnered with Humphrey Public Schools and Humphrey St. Francis to offer the Banking in Schools Program to students in grades K through 6. Banking in Schools is a financial literacy program that focuses on creating positive savings habits at an early age.

Students may choose to participate in the program, which involves making deposits into a Bank of the Valley Savings Account on “Banking in Schools Days.” On these days, Bank of the Valley is on-site at the elementary schools in the morning prior to the start of school and they are assisting students in making deposits to their Bank of the Valley account. Students receive prizes for reaching different savings benchmarks based on the number of times that they make deposits and/or the amount that they save. When a student graduates from 6th grade, or leaves their elementary school, they may either receive a check for all of the money that they had saved through the course of the program, or roll it over into a regular student savings account through Bank of the Valley.

Another added educational element to this program is that 6th grade students are selected by Bank of the Valley to work as student tellers for the Banking in Schools deposit days. These students handle each transaction under the supervision of a Bank of the Valley employee. Student tellers get a glimpse into the world of work in the Banking industry, and also learn valuable skills like customer service, math, and finance.

Tim Howard, Community President at Bank of the Valley’s Humphrey location, is excited to begin this partnership with Humphrey Public and St. Francis. “The staff and I are very excited to get the program started; we’re looking forward to working with and getting to know the kids at Humphrey Public and St. Francis,” says Howard.

Bank of the Valley now has partnerships with 7 elementary schools in providing the Banking in Schools Program, and over 150 participants. Last year, these participants saved a combined total of over $12,000.

The first Banking in Schools Day will take place at St. Francis Elementary on Tuesday, September 12th beginning at 7:30am. Humphrey Elementary will hold their first Banking in Schools Day on Wednesday September 13thbeginning at 7:30am.
