FREMONT – Upcoming public forums hosted by the city will give residents a chance to ask questions and address concerns regarding the possible chicken processing plant coming to the Fremont area.

In recent news, Costco Wholesale has put in a request to the City of Fremont to annex a portion of land, south of Fremont about 400 acres south of Cloverly Street in the Hills Farm area, for the construction and operation of its fully integrated poultry processing operation.

This request stems from Costco and Lincoln Premium Poultry’s desire to be located in the Fremont area and would allow the companies to take advantage of certain jurisdictional benefits such as tax incremental financing (TIF.)

Screen Shot 2016-06-06 at 11.26.30 AMCecilia Harry, Executive Director of the Greater Fremont Development Council, says the Hills Farm site is broken into four different parcels, three of which are zoned industrial. The fourth is zoned agricultural, and this is where the rezoning issue becomes a necessity.

Harry says that even though the Greater Fremont Development Council has been engaging with community members via door-to-door encounters, phone calls, and via civic groups and organizations, this a chance for the large public forum that so many have requested.

It’s important to remember, she says, that Costco and Lincoln Premium Poultry have not finalized a location to build the poultry processing plant. This process is about the due diligence necessary for any undertaking of this size.
