Democratic Governor Candidate Calls For Dismissal of Nebraska Corrections Director

TECUMSEH – State Senator and Democratic Candidate for Governor, Bob Krist wants Governor Pete Ricketts to fire Nebraska Corrections Director, Scott Frakes.

In a news conference outside the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution today, Krist said the state’s prison system continues to spiral out of control, putting employees and the public at risk.

Krist said Governor Pete Ricketts is not showing leadership on prison issues.   Krist also used the news conference to say he is being endorsed by the Nebraska Association of Public Employees Union.

Krist was accompanied by State Senator Lynne Walz, his running mate for the Governor’s race.   Krist says he’s formed discussion groups to talk over correction issues.

:32                  “corrections system”

Krist is on the Nebraska Legislature’s Judiciary Committee.  He says the committee hasn’t been able to measure any successes in corrections reform, despite Director Frakes saying the state needs a culture change in its corrections system.

He also said there’s been a lack of transparency in the state’s handling of securing the drugs used to carry out executions.

Krist today said he’s had several meetings with corrections officers and the state employee’s union.

:43                  “in our facility”

Krist said ultimately, the Governor’s office is responsible for corrections policy.  He said there is a lack of performance on the part of the current corrections director.  He said the state needs a corrections director that is not “a top-down, my-way-or-the-highway” director.

Krist said the legislature got what it could get out of reforms under LB 605, emphasizing sentencing alternatives.

:30                  “solve our problem”

Krist said he would “re-energize another LB 605 process”, if elected as governor.
