Engine Fire Along Highway 81 Slows Traffic

Columbus – A SUV on fire temporarily slowed down Highway 81 northbound traffic last night, north of Columbus. Luckily, the driver and her three small children were able to escape before the fire consumed the vehicle.

At 9:45 pm Columbus Fire and Rescue was dispatched to HWY 81 just north of 295th street for a small engine fire. A deputy with the Platte County Sheriffs Dept. was first on scene and attempted to put out the flames with his fire extinguisher with no luck.

Fire crews arrived shortly after and were able to get the fire under control. Most of the SUV’s damage was confined to the engine compartment. The driver and her children were taken to the Platte Center Fire department to wait for a ride.
