COLUMBUS – A brand new event made its exciting debut at the Platte County Fair on Friday night.
The first annual baby olympics took place in the Ag Park Exhibit Hall. The event was put together by the Columbus Community Hospital’s Wiggles & Giggles pediatric therapy clinic, in an effort to create a unique event that children could participate in.
“We were actually approached by the extension office here at the fair,” Wiggles & Giggles Supervisor Jill Zaruba said. “They were looking to add some new opportunities for children, and we modeled it after some different episodes that had happened at different fairs and made our own.”
The olympics consisted of five different events. A baby crawling contest, a walking contest for children 15 months old, a running contest for children ages 16-24 months old, an obstacle course for two-year-olds, and a slightly more challenging obstacle course for three-year-olds.
Nearly 100 children participated in the event. With how successful the debut edition of the baby olympics was, the hope is that it becomes a yearly tradition at the Platte County Fair.
