COLUMBUS – Gehring Construction & Ready Mix will be working on two roads improvement projects in Columbus this summer.
The Columbus City Council awarded the construction company projects on 15th Street and 3rd Avenue during its meeting on Monday night. In the case of both projects, Gehring was the only company to enter bids.
Gehring entered a bid of $1,283,544.25 for the reconstruction of 15th Street from 27th to 33rd Avenues. The project includes the widening of the street width from 30 to 33 feet from 28th to 33rd Avenues, including adding concrete street with integral curbing, concrete sidewalks with ADA ramps, water main replacements including service lines, additional storm sewer inlet constructions, sodding disturbed areas, and related work.
The project along 15th Street is scheduled to begin this August, and completion is anticipated in June 2020. Gehring says that the winter weather, along with work associated with the March flooding resulted in a later than anticipated start and completion date.
Gehring entered a bid of $2,126,761.62 for construction of 3rd Avenue from 8th Street to South 3rd Street. The project includes a 41-foot wide urban paving section, sidewalks, storm sewer stubs and inlets, utility adjustments, seeding/sodding, and related work.
The Nebraska Department of Transportation will pay for the project, and submit a reimbursement request to the City this Fall at the start of the City 2019-2020 budget. The estimated City participation is $909,284.52, of which an estimated $400,000 will be assessed to benefiting properties.
Construction on the 3rd Avenue project is expected to begin this June, and will be completed by the end of the year.
