COLUMBUS – The Kearney Bearcats pulled off a dramatic, come-from-behind win to stun the Columbus Discoverers 3-2 on Thursday at Wilderness Park.
The first half was dominated by the home team, as Columbus took a 1-0 lead in the early going. The Discoverers would tack on another one late in the first half as they looked like they were on their way to an easy victory, leading 2-0 at halftime thanks to goals from seniors Landon Brabec and Jesus Adame.
But the second half would be a different story, as the Bearcats showed why they are one of the best teams in the state. Carson Schwarz brought Kearney within one midway through the second half, but they would still find themselves trailing 2-1 in the late stages.
After failing to convert on a penalty kick, things looked bleak, but the Bearcats wouldn’t die. Instead AJ Faz and Royce Austen netted in the final five minutes to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and to leave the Discoverers stunned.
