FREMONT – The Salvation Army in Fremont kicked off the annual Kettle Campaign with a Kettle- Kick Off Coffee event on Tuesday.

Every year the Salvation Army holds their Kettle Campaign to help raise money in order to continue assisting people in need during the holidays. The campaign dates back to 1891 when Capt. Joseph McFee made the effort to raise money to feed hungry people on Christmas. Captain and Corps Officer with the Salvation Army, Stephen Hansen says it is now their most popular campaign and biggest fundraiser this time of year. He says the goal this year is to raise over $160,000.

“We’re hoping to raise about $164,000 and some change. We hope to do this through a number of different things,” said Hansen. “Through kettles, direct mail, and people stopping by. And through the Adopt-a-Family that First National Bank does for us every year. And that all goes to assist people at Christmas and throughout 2018 as we move forward.”

Even though the holiday season is just beginning, Capt. Hansen says they have already received some donations.

“We’re just starting. We’ve had some money coming in for Thanksgiving. It’s going strong,” said Hansen. “We’re seeing a lot of good gifts coming in through that. Friday the 17th is really our big kick off when the kettles start. That’s our main push that kind of kicks off the year for us. That’s why we have this event to get awareness out there so people know we’re starting to do our fundraising efforts. And really focus on Christmas and assisting people that need help this Christmas season.”

Hansen says anyone interested in volunteering to help The Salvation Army reach their goal can call his office, or sign up online.

“You can either go to, or you can call our office at (402) 721-0930. We can assist you in signing up to ring that way. We’re also looking for volunteers to help with our distributions,” said Hansen. “People to help deliver food to some of the towers for some of those shut-ins that can’t get out. They can’t get here to get the box and get it back to those locations. So if you’re available for those things, you can call the office as well, and we can set you up to help with those distributions.”

The Salvation Army office in Fremont is located at 707 N. I Street, and the number is (402) 721-0930.
