COLUMBUS – The Columbus Community Hospital announced that Maureen Spelts, BSN, RN, in CCH’s Infusion Center was nominated for the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
Spelts was honored at CCH on January 4th with the award. Spelts started her career at CCH in 1998, and returned in 2003 after briefly leaving. Spelts previously worked in the OR, Same Day Services, and the Acute Care Unit, and has worked in the Infusion Center since May 2018.
Dorothy Bybee, CCH’s vice president of Patient Care Services/Chief Nursing Officer, says that the patients in the Infusion Center tend to be long-term, which allows Spelts to really get to know her patients. Bybee says that she’s seen Spelts greet patients “as if they were family.”
A patient’s sister nominated Spelts for the DAISY award after witnessing the individualized, compassionate care Spelts gave to her brother. In the nomination letter, the sister wrote that Spelts was always able to put a smile on her brother’s face, and that Spelts went above and beyond to check in on the patient when he was being treated in another facility.
The DAISY award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care of nurses. CCH says that they recognize one of their nurses with this special honor each quarter.
