Stromsburg Man Sentenced In Platte & Colfax Counties For Vehicle Thefts

COLUMBUS – A Stromsburg man will be serving jail time in connection with multiple vehicle thefts from multiple counties.

24-year-old Brett Roesener was sentenced in both Platte and Colfax counties this week for multiple counts of theft by unlawful taking and theft by receiving stolen property. Roesener was sentenced in Colfax County on Wednesday, and in Platte County on Friday.

Court records say that on November 23rd, 2018 a burglary was reported at Lopez Auto Sales in Schuyler, where a 2014 Chevrolet Captiva and a 2008 Ford Mustang were stolen. Along with the vehicles, an iPad Mini, four paint pistols, a welders helmet, car polisher, and a snap-on utility pistol were also stolen.

The Mustang was recovered later that same day in Columbus, and the Captiva was found in Polk County with some of the stolen items inside. Roesener was arrested for being in possession of a stolen Chevrolet Silverado in Polk County on November 24th, and admitted to committing the robbery in Schuyler.

Along with the robbery, Roesener also admitted to stealing a Chrysler Sebring out of Polk County, which was recovered in Columbus on November 21st. Roesener had also stolen a Chevrolet Blazer in Polk County, and had forged several personal checks on the victims checking account.

In Colfax County, Roesener was found guilty of theft by unlawful taking $5,000+, and was sentenced to no less than two years and no more than three yeas in jail. Roesener did receive a credit of 141 days time served.

In Platte County, Roesener was found guilty of two counts of theft by receiving stolen property $1,500 – $4,999, and one count of theft by receiving stolen property $5,000+. On the first two counts, Roesener was sentenced to a term of no less than one year and no more than two years in jail, and was sentenced to a team of no less than 30 months and no more than five years on the third count.

The sentences out of Platte County will all run concurrently with one another, but will run consecutive to the sentence out of Colfax County.
