Trail Work, Batting Facility Project Continuing in Beatrice

BEATRICE – A bid date reportedly could be set for a long-awaited recreational trail project in Beatrice.  City Administrator Tobias Tempelmeyer says the Nebraska Department of Transportation informed local officials Monday that the department is pushing for a bid-letting date next February.

The trail segment would extend from the Big Blue Water Park east, and then north to Hannibal Park…a significant step toward completing a trail that could connect all parts of the community.

Tempelmeyer says the Nebraska DOT has contacted property owners, starting the land acquisition process for the trail.

Meanwhile, work continues after being delayed somewhat by weather, on a trail connection between 2nd and Court, south to a trail head near Dempster Manufacturing.  Much of the concrete has been installed for that trail section.

An indoor batting facility at Hannibal Park has its walls and the roof in place, which work shifting to the interior.  City officials say equipment has arrived for the new splash pad being planned at Astro Park.  The city is hoping for more favorable weather, to complete that project, yet this year.

Officials also say some planting could begin on property near First and Grant Streets this week.   The area will be transformed form a former salvage area to park land, with the planting of trees, native grasses and other plants.
