COLUMBUS – With the winter season in full swing, maintaining a regular exercise routine is a great way of staying healthy through the holidays.
The Columbus Community Hospital’s latest Walk With A Doc event discussed how to stay healthy during the winter, and the best practices to take when exercising while feeling sick. Dr. Michelle Sell says that the general rules for exercising while sick are to split it up between symptoms that are felt from the neck up, and from the neck down.
Sell says that neck up symptoms are generally safe to exercise through, with those symptoms including a sore throat, a stuffy nose, or a dry cough. When considering neck down symptoms though, a little more caution needs to be used when debating whether or not to exercise.
Neck down symptoms include body aches, fever, nausea , or a productive cough that could suggest pneumonia. Sell says those symptoms will require a little bit more recovery time before heading back to the gym, especially since they may be contagious.
Following a brief presentation by Sell, attendees were invited to walk around the concrete gym at the 1C Church, engaging in a healthy and social activity with one another. CCH also gave away a $100 gift card to Nebraska Sports, with all who attended entered into the drawing.
The next Walk With A Doc event will take place on January 15th at the 1C wood gym.
