Defense Carries Norfolk Catholic to Historic Win

LINCOLN – One can find a lot of truth in cliches.

Take, for instance, the common refrain “Defense wins championships.”

Norfolk Catholic’s defense looked anything but cliche in proving the old adage to be true, limiting a high-powered Boone Central/Newman Grove offense to just 193 total yards in a 35-0 win in the Class C1 State Championship game.

The Knights, aided by winds gusting as high as 35 miles per hour, disrupted BC/NG’s passing game, holding all-state caliber quarterback Dylan Gentrup to 4-of-18 passing and just 39 yards.

Norfolk Catholic also forced five turnovers, which was more than enough for their punishing ground attack.

Junior RB Dylan Kautz carried the ball 36 times for 193 yards and 3 TD’s, helping Norfolk Catholic become the first program in Nebraska history to win 10 state championships.
