Five-Run Start For Wayne Post 43 Puts Them In Championship Tuesday

WAHOO – It was a one-run ball game on June 13 between Wayne and Columbus Lakeview in Ralph Bishop League regular season play. Monday evening saw both teams take to the diamond looking to survive elimination from the 2018 Class B5 Area Junior Legion Tournament.

From Sam Crawford Field in Wahoo, #1 Wayne took on #3 Columbus Lakeview where Post 43 won in Wayne, 1-0 in RBL play.

Wayne jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning before scoring another run in the second. In the fifth, Wayne outscored Lakeview 2-1 before Post 283 added two more runs in the sixth. Wayne held on for the 7-3 win to improve to 17-4 (correction from on air) on the season as Columbus Lakeview falls to 12-8-1.

Trevor DeBoer paced Wayne at the plate with a pair of doubles, a single and three RBI. Blake Bartos singled, doubled and drove in two runs; Gunnar Jorgensen singled twice and drove in a run; Victor Kniesche doubled and drove in a run; Hagan Miller doubled as Josh Lutt and Reid Korth both singled.

Lutt picked up the win in six and a third innings allowing three runs off of six hits while striking out three batters and walking five. Tyrus Eischeid worked the final two-thirds allowing one hit.

Taden Bell recorded a single and double for Lakeview as Caleb VanDyke doubled and drove in a run. Justin Gaston singled and drove in a run as Sam Kwapnioski, Cooper Tessendorf and Adam VanCleave all singled.

Bell suffered the loss in four and two-thirds allowing seven runs off of 10 hits while striking out six batters and walking two. Cooper Tessendorf worked two and a third innings allowing one hit while striking one and walking one batter each.

Wayne will face #4 Lincoln Lutheran who defeated #2 Valparaiso, 19-4 in five innings Monday night. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10 as Wayne would need to win twice to advance to state. (4-0) Lincoln Lutheran did beat (2-1) Wayne, 4-2 on Saturday during Post 43s first game of the tournament.

Lakeview is the host team for the 2018 Class B Junior American Legion State Tournament. State action will last from Saturday, July 14 – Wednesday 18.

#6 Neligh-Oakdale eliminated #2 Hartington, 13-7

Tuesday schedule: 3-1 Neligh-Oakdale vs. #3 (3-0) Creighton at 5:30 p.m.

*Creighton defeated N-O on Sunday, 6-2 as Neligh-Oakdale would have to win twice


C2 Monday result in Pender:

#1 Pender defeated #4 Tekamah-Herman, 3-0

Tuesday schedule: 3-1 Pender will await the winner of either #2 (3-1) Hooper-Scribner vs. #4 (2-1) Tekamah-Herman at 5 p.m. Pender’s game is slated for 7:30 p.m.
