Two days before the start of the high school softball state tournament, half of the teams that will be part of the event don’t yet know if they’re going.
Heavy rain Thursday and Friday meant that many district tournaments couldn’t begin until Saturday. Other tournaments that squeezed in a few innings Friday didn’t even try to play Saturday because the fields were waterlogged.
So instead of having hotel and bus reservations already, 12 teams will be scrambling to make those plans late Monday afternoon.
There are five spots open in the Class A tournament that is set to play its first-round-games Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Smith Complex in Hastings.
Four spots are up for grabs in the Class B tournament and three are yet to be awarded for the Class C tournament. Class C’s first-round games are at 9 a.m. Wednesday, while Class B begins at 2 p.m.
Besides seven district tournaments that are yet to be completed, five wild-card berths also can’t be awarded until the last game — likely the District B-4 final — is finished. That game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in Wisner.
There is one wild-card spot available for a Class A team and two each for Class B and Class C.
Three of the four Class A districts that are scheduled to finish Monday are in Lincoln. After a few innings were played in the six first-round games Friday, another large downpour rendered the fields at the Bair Complex in northeast Lincoln unplayable.
Only two games finished before the downpour — Lincoln Pius X eliminated Omaha Bryan 13-2 in District A-2 and Omaha South forfeited to Lincoln Southwest in A-4 after the Silver Hawks built a 10-0 lead through the top of the third inning.
The two first-round games in A-7 are scheduled to resume at 11 a.m., and the other two games that didn’t get a chance to start in A-2 and A-4 also will begin at 11. The championship games in A-2, A-4 and A-7 are set for 1 p.m.
Millard North and Bellevue West are scheduled to resume their A-5 tournament championship game at 10 a.m. at Millard North.
Another district that hasn’t had many innings played is B-1 in Ralston. After rain made Crown and Wager Fields unplayable Thursday, the tournament was moved to Blair, where two of the games started Friday.
After the fields in Blair were declared unusable Saturday, the tournament moved back to Ralston to finish Monday. At 8:30 a.m. Ralston and Plattsmouth will complete their suspended game with the Rams ahead 6-2 in the top of the fourth inning, Plattsmouth having a runner on second base with two outs and a 3-1 count on the batter.
The other suspended game, which will resume at 9 a.m., has Omaha Gross leading Nebraska City 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning. Nebraska City is up with a runner on third base, two outs and a 1-2 count on the batter.
