Sixth Inning Run Production Allows Lakeview To Edge Wakefield In RBL Tourney Opener

WAYNE – After having their game moved from Battle Creek to Wayne, the Wakefield Post 81 Seniors opened the 2018 Ralph Bishop League Tournament Tuesday evening.

From Hank Overin Field, #9 Wakefield battled #8 Columbus Lakeview Post 283. The two teams met during the regular season on June 6 where Lakeview won 8-4 after scoring three runs in the seventh inning.

During first round RBL action, Lakeview began by scoring a run in the first and two in the second to lead 3-0. Wakefield then answered with a three-run fourth inning to tie the game while Lakeview took the lead back with a two-run fourth at 5-3. Post 81 tacked on a run in the fifth and five in the sixth to lead 9-5. Lakeview again took the lead back with a six-run sixth inning before holding on for the 11-9 win. Columbus Lakeview Post 283 improves to 5-14 on the season as Wakefield falls to 6-13.

Esgar Godinez recorded a three RBI triple while Julio Sanchez tacked on a pair of singles and one RBI. Nolan Belt and Justin Erb both picked up a single and double; Solomon Peitz, Joe Jansen, Brock Floyd and TJ Salmon all singled and drove in a run as Ben Klein singled.

Sanchez suffered the loss in five and a third innings allowing 10 runs off of 12 hits while striking out five batters, walking there and hitting one. Godinez worked two-thirds allowing one run off of one hit.

Dom Penne led Lakeview at the plate with two singles, a double and two RBI while Evan Tessendorf singled twice, doubled and drove in a run. Jaden Johnson recorded a double, triple and two RBI; Carter Luedtke singled twice and drove in a run; Adam VanCleave singled and drove in a run; Cooper Tessendorf doubled and drove in two runs as Cody Schaad added a single.

Schaad picked up the win in an inning and two-thirds allowing one hit. Penne started the opening five and a third innings allowing five runs off of seven hits while striking out seven batters, walking one and hitting one batter. Johnson came in but didn’t record an out allowing four runs off of four hits while walking two batters.

Columbus Lakeview Post 283 will next face #1 West Point Post 70 on Thursday, June 28 in West Point at 8 p.m.
