COLUMBUS – It was a back and forth contest until the very end, but Wayne was able to pull away from Hickman 10-7 to win the American Legion Class B Junior State Tournament.
The final game was held at Pawnee Park on Thursday night. Wayne advanced to the championship round after defeating Columbus Lakeview 4-0 following a rain delay on Wednesday. Hickman defeated Ashland 9-0 on Wednesday to advance, and needed to defeat Wayne in order to force a winner-take-all final game.
Hickman jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning, and were up 4-1 by the end of the third. Wayne was able to tie the game with a three-run fourth inning, and the two teams were tied 5-5 heading into the sixth.
In the sixth inning, Wayne benefited from multiple walks by Hickman pitching, as well as defensive miscues to explode for five runs. Timely hitting aided as well, as Wayne was in the driver’s seat with a 10-5 lead following the top of the sixth.
Hickman was able to tack on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, but that was as close as they would get, as Wayne claimed the state championship with a 10-7 victory. In all, Wayne scored its 10 runs on seven hits with one error, while Hickman earned its seven runs with 12 hits, but recorded eight errors during the game.
