LaVern Hartl

LaVern H. Hartl, 89, of Norfolk, Nebraska, died Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at St. Josephs Rehab and Care Center in Norfolk with his long time dear friend and caregiver, Norma Lewis, at this side. She was a true blessing to him.

Services will be held on Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at 1:00 pm at the Miller Funeral Home in Clarkson, Nebraska, with Pastor Chip Winter of Christ Lutheran Church of Norfolk officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Vern was born on February 9, 1927, in Clarkson to Anna Kovar Hartl and Joseph Hartl Sr. Vern was the youngest of twelve children and is the last survivor of the twelve. He was educated in District 34 Country School in Stanton County and then went on to graduate from Stanton High School in May of 1945.

After graduation Vern worked around the family farm for a period of time prior to moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he was employed by Sear Roebuck for a number of years. After leaving Minnesota, Vern went to visit his niece in Texas and stayed there for more than ten years. Vern was a very talented handyman and was able to repair both automobiles and houses.

When his oldest brother was diagnosed with cancer, he returned to Nebraska to help take care of him. After his brother’s death he stayed on at the family farm for a time and then moved to Clarkson where he lived for a number of years. During his time in Clarkson, Vern was employed by Bluebird Nursery, driving trucks and delivering plants around the country. Upon retiring from Bluebird, he moved to Norfolk where he lived for the last several years of his life. During this time he worked for Health Works in their retail store in Norfolk. The health food and vitamin industry was his real calling. He had studied vitamins and natural foods most of his life and loved working in the industry.

Sisters – Rose, Anna, Olga, Elaine and Lillian
